Emergency Care

Orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but issues can occasionally occur during treatment. Knowing how to respond can help prevent discomfort and protect your orthodontic appliances until you are able to visit our office.

Most orthodontic emergencies fall into two main categories: problems related to orthodontic appliances and direct injuries to the mouth or teeth.

What Should I Do If I Have an Orthodontic Appliance Emergency?

Orthodontic appliances are durable, but wires, brackets, or bands can sometimes become loose, bent, or broken. If you experience any appliance-related issues, please call Minahan Orthodontics during regular patient hours to schedule an appointment. For the comfort of all patients, we are unable to accommodate walk-in emergency visits.

Until we are able to see you, the following tips may help manage discomfort.

What If a Wire Is Irritating My Mouth?

If a tie wire is causing irritation, cover it with orthodontic beeswax. You may also gently tuck the wire under the archwire using a blunt object such as a pencil eraser or a Q-tip.

What If a Bracket or Band Comes Loose?

A loose band or bracket can usually remain in place until your appointment. Please contact our office during patient hours so we can schedule a visit to reattach the appliance if needed.

What If a Wire Is Broken or Poking?

A broken or poking archwire can often be gently bent back into place with a pencil eraser. If necessary, the wire may be trimmed carefully using clean nail clippers. If discomfort continues or you are unsure whether the issue has been resolved, please call our office for guidance.

What Should I Do After a Direct Injury to My Mouth or Teeth?

If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, whether or not you are currently in orthodontic treatment, immediate care is important.

What Are the First Steps After an Injury?

Apply ice to the injured area as soon as possible to reduce swelling and discomfort. Contact your regular dentist promptly, as X-rays are often needed to assess the extent of the injury.

Who Should I Call If a Tooth Is Knocked Out or Broken?

If a tooth has been displaced, knocked out, or fractured, contact your family dentist first. Your general dentist is best equipped with the necessary materials and anesthesia to treat dental injuries.

If orthodontic appliances are damaged or displaced during the injury, we will adjust or replace them after you have been seen by your dentist, based on the patient’s comfort level.

What If an Orthodontic Emergency Happens After Office Hours?

If an orthodontic emergency occurs after hours and the patient is experiencing pain, please contact our office. Instructions will be available regarding who to contact for further assistance and guidance.
